The heavy tank KV-1 (“Klim Voroshilov”) was the first Soviet heavy tank with a one-turret layout. It was introduced to the inventory in 1939. in 1941, the KV-1 was produced with the 76.2mm ZiS-5 gun with an ammunition load of 114 shots, and additional 25mm screens of armor protection for its body. The late 1941 version of the KV-1 tank was characterized by the welded simplified turret with the ZiS-5 gun with course and fodder machine guns DT 7.62.
In 1940-42, about 4,800 KV tanks of all modifications were produced. KV tanks were widely applied in combat of initial stages of the Great Domestic War of 1941-1945.
