The Foundation of Italian Medium Tanks

The M11/39 was Italy’s first medium tank during World War II.
It was officially designated as the M11/39, with production planned to start in 1939, and a total of 100 units were produced between 1939 and 1940.
The main armament, the Vickers-Terni M30 40 caliber 37 mm gun, was mounted on the right front side of the hull instead of the turret, while the turret was equipped with a Breda M38 8 mm twin machine gun.
This mounting method was similar to that of self-propelled guns, meaning that if the enemy was outside of the firing arc, the entire vehicle had to be turned to re-aim, which was a significant disadvantage in close combat.
However, there were some advancements, such as the adoption of a diesel engine that was more resistant to ignition when hit and had better fuel efficiency compared to the previous gasoline engines.
The M11/39 was first deployed in combat starting with the battles in Libya in 1940, but due to its weak armor, many vehicles were lost in combat, and by early 1941, nearly all were retired.
