Gottfried von Banfield was the only flying boat ace pilot in the Austro-Hungarian Imperial Navy of World War I. He shot down 20 aircraft, including unconfirmed, in a battle with Italian and French troops in the Gulf of Trieste in Italy in June 2015, earning him the nickname “The Eagle of Trieste.” He was the last soldier in history to receive the Maria Theresia Military Order for this service.
