Although France surrendered to Germany at the beginning of World War II, the Free French Forces were formed around de Gaulle, who resisted this. The Free French Forces were composed of more foreigners than people from France; among the various nationalities represented from North Africa to Tahiti, African soldiers from Senegal were the most numerous.
